The importance of ‘Open Markets’

Prior to the publication of the skills consultation documents, the BIS secretary of state Vince Cable launched a paper, ‘A Strategy for Sustainable Growth’, which states that while the country faces a period of tough savings in public spending, the coalition government is determined to create an environment that enables businesses to operate with confidence and helping to secure the economy for the future. The new plan sets out the three key ways that the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills can contribute, as follows:

• promoting free and open markets
• promoting business and innovation through entrepreneurialism and individual engagement in the economy
• smarter public and private investment in the economy including creating a highly-skilled workforce.
